Another Honeybee Threat
Honey bee workers are extremely important when it comes to their importance to pollinating crops and the production of honey. Statistically, in the United States, honey bees pollinate $15 billion in crops each year and in Georgia alone, the state's pollinator-dependent crops are worth an estimated $430 million annually.
The honey bee has a new predator, an invasive species the yellow-legged hornet. This species of hornet preys on and attacks honey bees for protein. In mid-august a savannah beekeeper discovered two worker hornets near his hives. This is the first reported case of the yellow-legged hornet in the United States. They are native to southeast Asia and were first introduced to France in 2004. Since August there have been 5 findings in the Savannah area.
